About Us
Our Story
Dr. Matthew Johnson is a board-certified Family Medicine Physician. He was born and raised in Greeneville, Tennessee and attended the University of Tennessee for his degree in Microbiology. He then went on to the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia for medical school and then the University of South Carolina for residency. He served as chief resident during his final year of residency.
Following residency, Dr. Johnson worked in rural underserved areas in both South Carolina and Pennsylvania while serving in the National Health Service Corps.
Following his service, he then became medical director for the St. Luke’s Rural Health Centers in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania while also serving as faculty attending physician with the St. Luke’s Miners Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Johnson and his family then relocated to Charlottesville to start Free Range Direct Primary Care.
In his free time, Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Danielle, and their two daughters. He enjoys traveling, good food and fueling his coffee addiction.
What exactly is DPC?
In the traditional, insurance-based primary care clinic, doctors are financially incentivized to see you as many times they can in order to maximize their reimbursement. Seriously. Not even kidding. When was the last time you were told by your doctor that they could only address 1-2 problems per visit. How is this ok? It’s the reason your visits are mere minutes with your doctor and also the reason your doctor stares at the computer the entire time. It’s not their fault, the system mandates it. That same healthcare system is pleading for a new, efficient way to keep patients happy and healthy.
Direct Primary Care (DPC) is the answer.
A monthly membership fee covers all primary care services such as preventative care, acute and chronic issues, minor procedures, osteopathic manipulation, etc. Bloodwork, medications, and imaging are literally a fraction of the cost (sometimes up to 95% less expensive).
